Try to talk to a kid in English, esp to one who is a stranger to English, and you will be rewarded with giggling or an innocuous smile. Why, you may wonder. The answer cannot be simpler: because it's something new and all kids are the most original scientists who are ever ready to spot something new. Imagine again the "Eureka" uttered by that bath-taking scientist. This simplicity of fun and joy associated with a simple-minded scientist cannot be torn apart from that of a child. They are one and the same. I got students like them; intellectual? No, at least not yet, and yet quite full of potential. They are interested in everything new. These students have one thing in common: they come from poor families and they have never attended a cram school and they are never told study is important. All in all, they were left very much alone and their parents allowed them to explore lots of things other than so-called academic studies.
As a result, many of them, once ignorant of academic studies, could wake up to the fun of studies overnight as they spotted the fun of it. These kids had lots of conventional fun as a child, riding a bike around or playing with mud or being a dreamer. Given enough personal space and they will connect, revealing their potential in the process. Happy that I am. Those kids I mentioned just now have connected with the joy of fun and they have not only tested into a good college but will have become one who is gonna contribute much to our society. You know why? They enjoy whatever they do. The point is then not to idle away your time. In Taiwan the kids are told to do this and that so in the end they forget how to take the initiative. They take orders and study always with the unterior purpose of getting something good in return. Thus, they don't study if not absolutely neccessary. John who is having a harvest of happy students
